The US Marines Want You
Halfsheet previously mounted World War I recruitment poster, titled "The U.S. Marines Want You," was created in 1917 by the prominent American illustrator Charles Buckles Falls (often credited as C.B. Falls). Historical Context & Design Impact The Design: The poster features a stern, generic U.S. Marine in a dark blue dress uniform looking directly at the viewer. His challenging glare and beckoning finger create a highly personalized, direct appeal for military service. The Background: The central figure is framed by broad red, white, and blue vertical stripes, instantly evoking patriotism and national identity. The Purpose: Published shortly after the United States entered World War I, it was distributed nationwide to rapidly expand the ranks of the Marine Corps. The bottom contains a blank space next to "Apply At" so local recruiting offices could stamp or write their physical address. The Connection to Uncle Sam: While heavily reminiscent of James Montgomery Flagg's legendary "I Want YOU for U.S. Army" poster released the same year, Falls' design explicitly focuses on the Marines' identity rather than the personification of Uncle Sam.
